While it’s easy to focus on the work we do within our local divisions and communities, it’s important to remember that the AOH has twin goals, one of which is to support the peaceful reunification of Ireland. Events like this serve as a powerful reminder that our efforts at the local level are part of a broader global mission. By engaging directly with leaders in Ireland, the Kevin Barry Division 3 continues to strengthen its connection to that mission and to the worldwide Irish community we are proud to be part of.
To that end members of the Kevin Barry Division 3 of Indianapolis, Indiana, recently traveled to Ireland as part of a larger group of Hoosiers visiting the country. During the trip, Division Historian and Honorary Indiana Consul of Ireland Designate, Kevin Charles Murray, organized a special reception between the division and Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The event was held in the historic Iveagh House in Dublin, specifically in its elegant ballroom, which dates back to 1896.
The program began with introductory remarks by Eoghan McSwiney, Deputy Director of U.S. Relations, who welcomed the group and outlined the evening’s agenda. He then introduced Sonja Hyland, Deputy Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, who offered formal opening remarks. Ms. Hyland expressed her pleasure in welcoming the group to Iveagh House and provided a brief history of the building and its significance in Irish governmental affairs. She also noted the strong and growing ties between Indiana and Ireland, highlighting that 52 Ireland-based businesses currently operate in Indiana. With the recent launch of a direct flight from Indianapolis to Dublin, she expressed hope for even stronger connections moving forward.
Following her remarks, Mr. McSwiney joined a panel discussion alongside three colleagues from the Department, each of whom shared insights into their roles and current priorities.
Aidan Cronin, Director of North South Policy and Shared Island Coordination, spoke about the all-island economy and cross-border trade between Ireland and Northern Ireland. He also spoke about the potential impact of U.S. tariffs and any EU counter-measures, emphasising the importance of ensuring continued seamless north-south trade flows. He reiterated Ireland’s firm stance on avoiding a return to a hard border on the island of Ireland.
Maurice Cotter, Director of Engagement (Northern Ireland), discussed the UK’s Legacy Act, passed in 2023. He shared that the Irish government had been critical of the act and welcomed the new UK Labour Party’s stance to repeal and replace it. However, he raised the key question: “Replace it with what?” noting that discussions between both governments are ongoing as reform efforts evolve.
Karen Lynch, Deputy Director of the Irish Abroad Unit, spoke about Ireland’s commitment to its global diaspora. She noted that currently, there were no applications from Indiana in this year’s round of DFA Emigrant Support Programme Funding. She encouraged representatives present to help raise awareness among other Irish groups in the state who may be interested in considering applications in the future. Her message underscored the government’s dedication to recognizing and supporting Irish abroad.
The reception served as a meaningful opportunity for cultural connection, international dialogue, and a reaffirmation of the longstanding bonds between Ireland and Indiana.
Although not all members of our division were able to make the journey to Ireland for various reasons, those who did attend the meeting at Iveagh House will share the positive insights and information they received at our next monthly meeting. For the members who were present, it was a great honor to represent the Kevin Barry Division 3 and to attend such a meaningful and memorable event.
