Kilcar GAA Celebrates 100th Anniversary
Many Irish families in Indianapolis, along with members of the Kevin Barry Division #3, trace their roots to the village of Kilcar and its surrounding area. Kilcar is a small Gaeltacht village in southwest Donegal with an urban population of 258. On Saturday, August 3, 2024, the Kilcar Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) celebrated its 100th anniversary. The GAA provides opportunities for individuals to participate in traditional Gaelic sports, including hurling, camogie, and Gaelic football. The organization also promotes Irish dance, music, and language. Kevin Barry member and past president John Hegarty grew up in Kilcar and played Gaelic football for the Kilcar GAA club. He also served as a past chairperson for the club.
Many past and current players traveled to Kilcar for the event, including John Hegarty, who was accompanied by Division President David Ruhmkorff. They joined over 400 people in attending the celebration. Memorabilia from the past 100 years was displayed and appreciated by all. The keynote speaker for the evening was Jarlath Burns, President of the GAA. President Burns delivered his remarks in both Irish and English, promoting the best of what the GAA has to offer. The event concluded with live music and dancing.
