Born in Indianapolis in 1941, Jim Lynch has the same name as his father and grandfather. His grandson is Seamus, Irish for Jim. He grew up in Irvington and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary. He was part of the fourth graduating class at Scecina High School. Jim walked-on as a freshman football player at Butler University. He considers it fortunate that he played on teams coached by the legendary Tony Hinkle. They won their conference every year. Jim taught and coached at Scecina for a year. He then went to Indiana University and received a master’s degree in Art Education. It was a great time to be on campus as IU was going to the Rose Bowl and he met his future wife Sue.
Jim started teaching art and coaching football at Howe High School. Eventually he dropped coaching and began designing and building sets for school plays and musicals. Howe closed in 1995 and he transferred to Arsenal Technical High School, performing the same work. He is very grateful that Indianapolis Public Schools, his coworkers and the students afforded him 36 years of rewarding and enjoyable employment.
Jim has been so busy in retirement that he wonders where he ever found time to work. He is a Master Gardener and volunteers at the Indianapolis Art Museum gardens. He is a lay minister at the St. Paul Hermitage. He donates his many talents to Miracle Place. He’s an avid supporter of Scecina. He has donated art work to many charitable causes. He is a physical fitness enthusiast, running in over 35 mini marathons. He even ran in the 25th Annual Dublin Ireland Marathon in 2004. Jim and family recently visited Ireland. Jim does a great job as our Recording Secretary and Newsletter Editor as well as photographer at Hibernian events!
Jim and Sue have two daughters, Anne and Julie. Anne, a child psychologist, is married to Mike Jordan. Their children are Erin and Molly. Julie, a nurse, is married to Chris DiGiusto. Their children are Seamus, Keegan and Brigid. Jim has expressed his gratitude at being named for the Presidents’ Award. We are likewise grateful and thankful to Jim and his family for sharing his time and talent with us.
Slainte, Jim!
